Description

Thorn Tree Bush Camp is in the heart of the Dinokeng Big 5 Game Reserve, situated about 45 minutes outside of Pretoria. Thorn Tree Bush Camp is family run and founded by myself (Rodney) and Elzabé du Toit.

Campsites / Bush camps
Six concealed bush campsites, each with its own private ablution (shower, flush toilet, and wash basin), electricity, braai, and water in proximity. Each stand is separated by natural bush, shrubs, and trees providing some privacy between the bush camps.

Monkey Thorn Traditional Accommodation
The Monkey Thorn is well suited for seniors, couples, and honeymooners looking for more traditional accommodation. The cottage has an air conditioner, a queen size bed, en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, kitchenette (with a gas stove and oven, microwave, and fridge) and the necessary means to cook and braai.

Elephant Root Luxury Tent
If you prefer more luxury in your tent and want a romantic weekend getaway, we have the Elephant Root Luxury Tent (Olifantswortel Luukse Tent) just for you. It accommodates a couple and will be your glamping breakaway for two. This tent has a queen size bed, en-suite bathroom with a bath and shower, kitchenette (with a single electric plate, microwave, kettle and a bar fridge) and the necessary means to cook and braai. More privately situated with view over the bush and a small splash pool.

Fever Tree Tented Cabin
The Fever Tree Tent Cabin is fully equipped and has en-suite ablution, fridge, gas hob, braai area, and extra double bunk stretcher for young children.

Umbrella Thorn Family Tent Camp
The Umbrella Thorn is a large safari tent with an open air en-suite bathroom ideal for a family of up to 5. It’s fully equipped with a king size bed (that can be made up as 2 singles), a bunk bed and luxury stretcher. A private boma and gazebo kitchen for dining is set up for families to reconnect and enjoy the excitement of a luxury camping experience.

Weeping Boerbean Tented Cabin
The Weeping Boerbean Tented Cabin is fully equipped with a fridge, gas hob, braai area, bedding and bath towels are included, and extra double bunk stretcher for young children

Sickle Bush – Tree Top tent
This tent camp is perfect for a young couple with its ‘double bed’ located on the platform of a converted rooftop tent – you need to climb a ladder to go to bed

For Friends / groups
These tent camps are perfect for either a couple or a duo of friends, having 2 single beds which can be moved to form a king-sized bed. Knob Thorn and Thorn Pear

Black Thorn
Black Thorn is naturally tucked away in a corner, located next to the fence. The layout of this tented bush camp makes it ideal for a group of 4 family members or friends. It consists of 2 tents each equipped with 2 single beds. The fully equipped interlinking kitchenette has a view of the bush and serves as a great dining area.

Scented Pod
Scented Pod sleep up to 8 people. This camp consists out of 4 tents sleeping 2 each on luxury stretchers, a kitchen tent, and boma; located next to the fence, overlooking a small water hole.

Wilderness 0ff Grid Campsite – no facilities
Limited off-grid unfenced wilderness campsites are available for the more experienced and adventurous campers. Suitable only for Experienced Wilderness campers who are fully equipped for wilderness off grid camping within a big five reserve.
You get to enjoy a truly wild adventure by camping in the unfenced area of the reserve amongst the free roaming big five, where you may encounter not only the night sounds of the bush but also a visit from our nocturnal animals, such as serval, porcupine, black-back jackal, lion, hyena, and others. This is not for the feint-hearted.
All wilderness campers must be self-sufficient, with your own water, ablution facilities and solar power. No generators are permitted, and 2 porta-potties are available for rent.
