History

  • Completed: 1854
  • Engineer: Andrew Geddes Bain, one of South Africa’s most famous road engineers.
  • It was one of the first mountain passes built with convict labour in the Cape Colony.
  • The pass was designed for ox-wagons and is regarded as one of Bain’s greatest engineering achievements.

  • Runs through the Limietberg Nature Reserve, part of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
  • Panoramic views of valleys, vineyards, and rugged peaks.
  • Numerous rock pools, waterfalls, and hiking trails.

  • Hiking: Popular trails like the Bobbejaans River Trail and Limietberg Hiking Trail start near or cross the pass.
  • Camping: Multiple campsites nearby (e.g. Tweede Tol, a CapeNature campsite).
  • Birdwatching and botany: The region is a hotspot for endemic fynbos species and birds like the Cape Sugarbird and Orange-breasted Sunbird.
  • 4×4 and adventure touring: While not off-road now, it’s still a go-to scenic drive for touring groups.
