Description of route:

Sani Pass, also known as the “Roof of Africa”, is one of the most iconic and breathtaking mountain passes in Southern Africa. It connects KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa to Mokhotlong in Lesotho, ascending the Drakensberg Mountains.

Quick Facts about Sani Pass

  • Location: Between Underberg (South Africa) and Mokhotlong (Lesotho)
  • Highest Point (Summit): ±2,876 meters (9,435 ft) above sea level
  • Elevation Gain: About 1,332 meters (4,370 ft) from the base to the summit
  • Pass Length: ±8 to 9 kilometers of steep gravel road
  • Road Condition: Gravel/dirt; 4×4 required by law (on the South African side)

Border Posts:
South Africa: Sani Pass Border Control (08:00–16:00)
Lesotho: Sani Top Border Post (08:00–18:00)

Route Overview
The pass starts near the Sani Pass Hotel in South Africa and climbs steeply through a series of switchbacks to the Sani Mountain Lodge at the top, which hosts the “Highest Pub in Africa”. The views are dramatic — with deep valleys, waterfalls, and rugged peaks.

Driving the Pass

  • South African Side: Requires a 4×4 vehicle. The road is steep, rocky, and can become slippery in wet or icy conditions.
  • Lesotho Side: Recently tarred, much easier to drive.
  • Weather Considerations: In winter, snow and ice are common at the summit. In summer, heavy rainfall can cause erosion or flash flooding.

What Makes Sani Pass Special

  • Scenery: The landscape is jaw-dropping — sheer cliffs, misty valleys, and panoramic views over KwaZulu-Natal.
  • Wildlife: Look out for eland, baboon troops, and bearded vultures.
  • Cultural Experience: On the Lesotho side, you’ll enter Basotho territory — expect to see shepherds, huts, and traditional life at high altitude.
  • Hiking and Adventure: Also popular for mountain biking and hiking trails into the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Historical Note
The route was originally a bridle path for pack animals transporting goods between South Africa and Lesotho. It was later widened into a road, but remains wild and adventurous — perfect for overlanders.
