Description of route:

Van Zyl’s Pass is a renowned and challenging 4×4 route in Namibia’s remote Kaokoland region, known for its rugged terrain and stunning scenery. It’s a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts, offering a thrilling adventure through a remote and beautiful area.

Named after Ben van Zyl, the first administrator of Kaokoland, who oversaw its construction in the 1960s using basic tools and local labour.

General Overview

  • Distance: ~10–15 km (depending on how you define the start and end)
  • Direction: East to West only (descending into the Marienfluss Valley)
  • Elevation drop: From ±950 m to ±500 m
  • Estimated driving time: 3 to 6 hours for just this section

Coordinates:
Start (Top): –17.63952, 12.74438
End (Bottom): –17.66950, 12.69832

Terrain & Driving Conditions

  • Trail type: Rocky, steep descent with sharp switchbacks, boulders, loose gravel, and narrow ledges
  • Gradient: Steep sections reaching 24%
  • Surface: No graded road — natural rock, sand, deep ruts, and ledges
  • Water crossings: Rare, but deep erosion in places during rainy season
  • Obstacles: Sharp rocks, steep drop-offs, high-clearance boulder navigation
  • This is not a maintained road — it’s essentially a historic 4×4 track carved out by early explorers. No guardrails, no signage, and zero room for error.

Vehicle Requirements

High-clearance 4×4 (Low-range gearing essential)

Preferably with:

  • Locking differentials
  • Rock sliders and underbody protection
  • Off-road tires with sidewall strength
  • Good brakes (long descents require excellent brake management)
  • Winch or traction boards are strongly advised, especially if solo

Driving Experience

  • Most drivers crawl down in first gear low-range
  • Spotters are often needed to guide vehicles through technical sections
  • Requires constant focus and patience — average speed <5 km/hRushing the descent risks vehicle damage or tipping over
  • Often done in a convoy, allowing for recovery and guidance

Scenery

  • The descent opens into one of the most breathtaking views in Namibia — the Marienfluss Valley
  • Remote, untouched landscape with red mountains, dusty plains, and Himba settlements in the distance
  • Viewpoints near the top provide iconic photo opportunities

Warnings

  • This pass has claimed vehicles; overturned or broken-down 4x4s have been abandoned along the route
  • There is no recovery service — if you get stuck, you must self-recover
  • Not suitable for beginners or under-equipped vehicles
  • No water, fuel, or assistance nearby

Navigation Tips

  • The route is unmarked, so GPS and/or experienced local guides are essential
  • Using the GPX track, enter at the eastern edge, drive carefully down to the bottom
  • Do not attempt to ascend — Van Zyl’s is strictly one-way (downhill) for safety

Nearby Points of Interest

  • Otjihipa Mountains
  • Marienfluss Valley
  • Kunene River & Epupa Falls (northwest)
  • Himba communities (respect local customs, especially regarding photography)
