Last Wednesday, the Maroelas.com team made a last-minute decision to book a campsite after seeing a promising weather forecast for the weekend.
It didn’t take long for us to realize we weren’t alone in wanting a quick getaway.
After calling several places, we were fortunate to secure a spot at Rivierzicht River Resort, located along the Breede River, just 13 km before Robertson.
Things to do and see in the Robertson area:
- Explore wine farms along the Robertson Wine Valley.
- Visit the Sheilam Cactus & Succulent Garden.
- Visit Owl’s Rest Olive and Lavendar farm
- Taste olive oils and balsamic vinegars at Lion’s Creek Estate
- Take a cruise on the Breede River
- Enjoy a relaxing and unique steam train trip
- Hike in the Vrolijkheid Nature Reserve
Rivierzicht offers a variety of options, all along the Breede River: 6 self-catering cabins, 9 self-catering tented camps and 30 campsites. Guests can do fishing, canoeing, bird-watching, swimming and hiking.
On Friday morning, we hooked up the trailer and hit the road from Ceres, traveling through Worcester to Robertson. Eager to arrive by 2 PM, the designated check-in time, we looked forward to setting up camp early and unwinding by the refreshing waters of the Breede River.
We were assigned campsite no. “O,” located almost at the far end of the west side of the grounds.
The friendly lady at the office offered us other open shady sites, warning, “It’s going to be a hot weekend.” Despite the tempting options, we decided to stick with our original spot. It turned out to be the perfect choice. We quickly parked the trailer under the shade trees and set up camp, ready to enjoy our getaway.
Our feedback on Rivierzicht Rivier Resort:
- The tidy campsites feature grass and shade trees, though a few are closed due to flooding from the past winter season.
- The nearest ablution facilities, featuring four bathrooms (each with a shower, toilet, and sink), are serviced twice daily. A broom and mop are available for self-cleaning if desired.
Each bathroom is stocked with toilet paper, hand wash, and air freshener.
Additionally, there are two outdoor sinks for washing dishes and clothes. - The gas geyser at the ablution ensures that there is always hot water.
- The resort allows dogs, and many campers made use of this concession.
- Each site has a power point, a water tap and a braai drum.
- The resort’s water is not potable, but bottled water (5 liters), ice, and braai wood are available for purchase at a central location, with payments made via an honesty box.
- Campers are welcome to bring their own bicycles, canoes, and fishing gear. Many also enjoyed floating in the river on inflatable inner tubes, using water noodles, and paddle boarding.
- A new feature available is the option to hire a wood-fired hot tub for a minimum of two nights, which are placed at your campsite or cabin.
- The resort enforces a strict policy of no loud music and no noise after 10 PM, which we appreciated. Our fellow campers also respected this rule, contributing to a peaceful atmosphere.
- On Sundays, there’s no need to hurry for check-out, as long as it’s before 2 PM.
- Limited Wi-Fi is available only at the cabins, but that wasn’t an issue for us, as the cell phone signal at the resort was strong.
